What Are the Rules of Madcap Mahjong?
The core rule is to match pairs of identical, unblocked tiles to remove them from the board. A tile is considered unblocked, or 'free', if it has no other tiles on top of it and is open on either its left or right side.
You can't select a tile that's sandwiched between two others.
Some special tiles, like Flowers and Seasons, don't need to be identical. Any Flower tile can be matched with any other Flower tile, and the same principle applies to Season tiles. The game is won when you've successfully cleared every single tile from the layout.
Timed vs. Casual Mode
Madcap Mahjong caters to two different playstyles. If you enjoy a challenge, you can play in the timed mode, where the goal is to clear the board as quickly as possible and beat your personal best time.
This adds a layer of urgency to your decisions.
Alternatively, you can select the casual, untimed mode. This allows you to play at your own pace without the pressure of a ticking clock. It's perfect for a relaxing puzzle session or for learning the game's strategies without stress.
Using Hints and Shuffles
If you find yourself stuck with no obvious matches, the game provides helpful tools. The Hint button will highlight a possible matching pair on the board, guiding your next move. It's a great way to get unstuck without giving up.
When no legal moves are left at all, the Shuffle button becomes available. Activating it will rearrange all the remaining tiles on the board, creating new potential matches. Use this as a last resort to continue your game when you've hit a dead end.

Choose the match that frees up the most useful tile for your next move. Use Hints Sparingly - Try to find matches on your own first. Using hints too often can prevent you from developing your pattern-recognition skills.
Shuffle as a Last Resort - A shuffle can completely change the board, sometimes for the worse. Only use it when you are certain no other moves are possible.
