Fireboy and Watergirl 4: Crystal Temple is the fourth entry in the long-running cooperative puzzle series, this time set in a temple themed around crystals that bend, redirect, and interact with the elemental characters in new ways.
The core fire/water cooperation remains, but the crystal mechanics make this entry feel meaningfully different from the earlier temples.
Crystal Temple introduces colored crystals that interact with the characters and environmental elements. Some crystals can be carried by either character; others can only be moved by the matching elemental character. Light filters through certain crystals to power switches.
Some crystals create temporary platforms when illuminated. The puzzle vocabulary expands significantly compared to the earlier temples.
By the fourth game, the design team had clearly refined the asymmetric-cooperation formula.
Puzzles ramp from teaching-level (introducing one new mechanic at a time) to mid-game integration (combining mechanics from earlier in the temple) to expert challenges that ask players to chain multiple solutions in a single level. The progression respects both new and returning players.
Local co-op with a friend remains the most fun way to play, but solo control of both characters is fully viable with practice. The keyboard layout (WASD + arrows) maps naturally to two-handed solo play, and many veteran players prefer it for the precision.
The game runs in any modern browser via HTML5. No installs, no plugins. It plays on Chromebooks, school computers, library PCs, and modern phones or tablets. Two-player co-op needs a full keyboard; solo play works on any input.
Mobile single-player is possible but two-character coordination is much easier with keyboard.
Watergirl: WASD to move (W to jump). Fireboy: Arrow keys to move (Up to jump). Both characters need to reach their colored exits to complete each level. Watergirl walks through water but dies in fire; Fireboy walks through fire but dies in water.
Neither can touch green slime. Use crystals (carryable in this temple) and light beams to power doors, platforms, and switches.
Read the Whole Level First - Crystal Temple puzzles often span the entire level; don't commit to a route before understanding what every crystal does.
Carry Crystals Carefully - Walking off platforms while holding a crystal sometimes drops it; check footing before moving with held items. Light Beam Angles Are Precise - Reflectors and crystals need exact placement; experiment in a level's safe zone before risking lives.
Coordinate Switch Timing - Some switches need both characters on them simultaneously; counting 'one, two, three, jump together' helps in solo play. Replay for Diamonds - First playthrough, prioritize finishing; second playthrough, chase the diamond collection that completionists pursue.
