Russian Checkers is a classic strategy board game, also known as Shashki, that offers a distinct variation on the standard Anglo-American version. This free-to-play HTML5 browser game challenges you to outmaneuver your opponent by capturing their pieces. You can test your skills against a computer AI, compete with players worldwide in online multiplayer, or share a screen for a two-player match.
While the goal of capturing all opposing pieces remains the same, Russian Checkers introduces several key rule changes. The most significant is that regular pieces, or 'men', can capture backwards as well as forwards. This opens up many more tactical possibilities compared to standard checkers.
Furthermore, captures are mandatory. If a player can make a capture, they must do so. If multiple capture sequences are available, the player can choose which one to execute. This rule forces action and prevents defensive stalemates, leading to more dynamic and aggressive gameplay.
When one of your pieces reaches the farthest row on your opponent's side of the board, it is crowned and becomes a 'king'. Unlike the king in standard checkers which moves only one space, the king in Russian Checkers is a 'flying king'. This powerful piece can move any number of empty squares diagonally in any direction, much like a bishop in chess.
This enhanced movement makes creating a king a top priority. A single flying king can control large portions of the board, setting up multi-jump captures and putting immense pressure on your opponent. Mastering the use of your kings is essential for victory in Russian Checkers.
You can enjoy Russian Checkers directly in your web browser with no downloads or installation required. As an HTML5 game, it's fully unblocked and accessible on most school or work networks, allowing you to jump into a quick match of strategic board game action whenever you have a free moment.
The goal in Russian Checkers is to capture all of your opponent's pieces or to block them so they have no legal moves remaining. Use your mouse to play. Left click on a piece to select it, which will highlight its possible moves. Left click again on a valid highlighted square to move your piece there. Your regular pieces, called 'men', move one space diagonally forward. To capture, you must jump over an adjacent opponent's piece to the empty square immediately behind it. A key rule is that men can capture by jumping backwards, though they can only move forward for non-capture moves. If one of your men reaches the last row on the opposite side of the board, it gets promoted to a 'king'. A king can move any number of empty squares diagonally, forwards or backwards, making it an extremely powerful piece.
Rush for a King - Getting a piece to the back row early can completely change the game. A 'flying king' controls long diagonals and is difficult for your opponent to trap. Force Bad Moves - Since captures are mandatory, look for ways to sacrifice one of your pieces to force your opponent into a move that opens them up for a multi-jump capture on your next turn. Control the Center - Dominating the central squares of the board gives your pieces more mobility and limits your opponent's options, making it easier to set up attacks. Look for Chains - Always scan the board for multi-jump opportunities. Capturing two or three pieces in a single turn is the fastest way to gain a decisive advantage. Think Defensively - While attacking is key, always consider your opponent's mandatory capture options. Avoid leaving your pieces in positions where they can be used to start a capture chain against you.
