Zombies and other hostile mobs cannot spawn in well-lit areas, making your island much safer at night. Sapling Priority - When you chop down your first tree, make sure you collect every sapling it drops.
Replanting them is the only way to get a renewable source of wood. Don't Waste Dirt - Dirt is a very limited resource initially. Use it to create a small patch for tree farming before turning it all into farmland for crops.
