How Does Combat Work?
Combat in Dungeon Chess feels both familiar and fresh. Your goal on each floor is to capture all the enemy pieces without being captured yourself. To move and attack, you first select a card from your hand-be it a Rook, Knight, or Queen.
Your hero will then adopt the movement and attack patterns of that specific piece for one turn.
This means you must constantly adapt your strategy. One moment you're sliding across the board like a Bishop, the next you're making an L-shaped jump like a Knight to land the perfect checkmate on an enemy pawn.
You need to anticipate enemy moves, which follow standard chess rules, and position yourself for a successful capture.

The core mechanic revolves around managing your hand of cards. You don't get to move like a Queen every turn. You're dealt a limited set of cards for each level, and once you play a card, it's gone for that floor.

Analyze the Board - Before playing a card, take a moment to see which enemies threaten which squares. Avoid moving into an obvious trap. Save Your Queen - The Queen card is the most powerful, offering maximum mobility.
Keep it in your hand for emergencies or for when you can capture multiple pieces in sequence. Knight's Advantage - The Knight's unique L-shaped jump can get you out of tight spots or deliver a surprise attack over enemy lines.
It's often your best tool for breaking a stalemate. Control the Center - Just like in standard chess, occupying the central squares of the board gives you more options and restricts enemy movement.
Think Two Steps Ahead - Consider what the enemy's most likely response will be to your move. Try to force them into positions where they are vulnerable on your next turn.
