Periodically, flying saucers will appear. The large, slow saucer fires randomly and is worth 200 points, while the small, fast saucer aims its shots directly at you and is worth a valuable 1,000 points.

The game progresses in waves; once you clear all asteroids from the screen, a new, more crowded field appears.

Mastering the Hyperspace Jump

One of the most iconic mechanics in Atari Asteroids is the hyperspace jump. When you find yourself completely cornered with no escape, you can press a key to instantly disappear and reappear at a random location on the screen. It's a high-risk, high-reward maneuver.

While it can save you from certain doom, there's a chance you'll rematerialize directly in the path of another asteroid, resulting in instant destruction. Because of its unpredictability, you should only use the hyperspace jump as a last resort when a collision is absolutely guaranteed.
