Hex Takeover is a turn-based strategy puzzle game playable directly in your browser, where players compete to conquer hexagonal tiles on various boards. This HTML5 game challenges your tactical thinking, requiring careful placement and strategic moves to expand your territory and outmaneuver AI opponents.
It’s perfect for fans of casual strategy and tile-laying games looking for a quick, engaging mental workout.
At its core, Hex Takeover presents you with a grid of hexagonal tiles, with you and an AI opponent starting on opposite sides. Your objective is simple: claim more tiles than your adversary.
Each turn, you select one of your owned hexes, then choose to either "move" or "duplicate" it to an adjacent, empty, or opponent-owned tile.
Moving a piece allows you to extend your reach, capturing new ground or directly converting an enemy tile to your color.
Duplicating, however, places a new piece on an adjacent tile while keeping your original piece in place, which is excellent for consolidating territory or setting up future attacks. You'll need to master both tactics to succeed across the diverse map layouts.
Despite its straightforward mechanics, Hex Takeover offers surprising strategic depth. The game’s "Difficult Games" tag comes from the need for foresight and adaptability.
You're not just expanding your own borders; you're actively trying to cut off and isolate your opponent's pieces, limiting their options and preventing them from growing. Different board shapes and starting positions mean no two matches feel exactly alike.
The game balances its casual puzzle appeal with elements found in more complex strategy titles, but without overwhelming players. Its "Cozy Games" aspect shines through in the calm, turn-by-turn pace, letting you ponder your moves without time pressure.
This makes Hex Takeover a great choice for quick breaks or extended sessions of thoughtful gameplay.
You can play Hex Takeover for free directly in your web browser, with no downloads or installations required. This means easy access on nearly any device, whether you're at home, school, or work.

The main goal in Hex Takeover is to conquer more hexagonal tiles on the board than your opponent. You win by having the majority of tiles colored as yours by the end of the game, or by completely eliminating the opponent's pieces.
You control the game using your mouse. Use a left click to select one of your owned hexagonal tiles. Once selected, you'll see possible moves highlighted.
After selecting your piece, you can choose to either 'Move' or 'Duplicate'. Moving allows you to jump to an adjacent empty hex or an opponent's hex, turning it to your color.
Duplicating places a new piece on an adjacent hex, converting it, while your original piece stays put.
Strategic use of 'Move' to push into enemy territory and 'Duplicate' to solidify your own area is key to outmaneuvering the AI.
Control the center - Early control of central hexes provides more outward expansion options. Isolate enemies - Try to surround small groups of opponent hexes to prevent them from growing.
Consider future turns - Before making a move, think about how your opponent might respond and plan your next two steps. Prioritize neutral tiles - If given the choice, capture neutral (empty) hexes to expand your border without directly engaging.
Defend your home base - Always ensure your starting hexes are well-protected, as they are crucial for continuous expansion.
